Wrath
Introduction
• Fallen Condition Focus: As fallen human beings we are all liable to get angry in one way or another. Unfortunately, we underestimate the power of anger to damage our own souls, to separate us from God, and to destroy relationships with others.
• Sermon Proposition: Since Jesus teaches us the gravity of unchecked anger and offers forgiveness and freedom, we must take to heart what he teaches about this subject and come to him for his grace.
• Purpose: To call us to be reconciled to God and one another
I. Jesus teaches against the sin of anger (5:21-26)
A. Jesus warns us about the consequences of unchecked anger (5:21-22)
B. Jesus instructs us how to reconcile with those whom we have offended (5:23-24)
C. Jesus reveals the urgency for reconciling (5:25-26)
II. Through Jesus Christ we can find forgiveness and deliverance from sin - even anger (Rom. 6:11, 12)
III. So What?
A. Remembering to not make excuses (Col. 3:8)
B. Catching our anger before it spills over (Eph 4:26-7; Ja. 1:19-20)
C. Learning how to say to others, "I'm sorry. I apologize for my angry words, attitude, etc. Please forgive me." (Matt. 5:24)
D. Confessing our sin to a brother or sister (James 5:13-16)
