What is Christian Baptism?
Introduction
Baptism during the Communist Regime in Yugoslavia
Fallen Condition Focus: Baptism can just be another religious ritual that we have experienced, but we actually don't understand its meaning and significance for our faith today
Sermon Proposition: Since the Lord has commanded his church to baptize new disciples of Jesus, we ought to come to Christ and his church for baptism and live out our baptismal commitment in our daily lives.
A. Let's first learn and understand the meaning of Christian baptism according to the Bible
1. Baptism is a washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19-20, Acts 2:38-39, 1 Pet. 3:21)
2. Baptism is a uniting with Christ in his death and resurrection (Rom. 6:3-5; Col. 2:11, 12)
3. Baptism is a sealing with the Holy Spirit for new life now and eternal life forever (Jn. 3:3, 5; Eph. 1:13, 14; Titus 3:5)
B. So What? What shall we do?
1. Let us come for baptism in repentance and faith in Christ and become his disciple
2. Let us claim our baptism renewing our baptismal vows being refreshed spiritually through the power of this sacrament
3. Let us commit ourselves to live daily in the baptismal reality of the new creation by the power of the Holy Spirit
Conclusion
Baptism is a rejection of the world order and a wholehearted union with Christ
