The Parable of Talents

Introduction

  • Fallen Condition Focus: We don't realize we have been given some portion of our Master's wealth to steward and that we will be held accountable for what we did with His wealth. We can have misconceptions about our Master and so live in fear and laziness regarding our responsibility to be a faithful steward.
  • Sermon Proposition: Since our Master has given each of us some portion of His wealth to steward for Him while He is away, we ought to do business with His wealth for the sake of His kingdom and glory
  • Purpose: To call God's people to faithful and responsible stewardship of all of life for God's kingdom and his glory

  1. Since our Master has given each of us some portion of his wealth to steward for Him while He is away, we ought to use our time and opportunities for our Master's kingdom and glory (Matt. 25:19; cf. Matt. 24:36, 44; Eph. 5:15; Prov. 10:5; Jn. 9:4; 2 Cor. 6:2; Heb. 10:24-25; Gal. 6:9, 10)

  1. Since the Master has given each of us some portion of his wealth to steward for Him while He is away, we ought to use our money, finances, and other resources for our Master's kingdom and glory (Matt. 25:14, 15; cf. Mal. 3:8-12; Matt. 6:2-4; 19:21; Lk. 12:32-34; Acts 20:34, 35; Eph. 4:28)

III. Since the Master has given each of us some portion of his wealth to steward for Him while He is away, we ought to use our talents, spiritual gifts, skills, and natural abilities for our Master's kingdom and glory (1 Cor. 12:4-7; Rom. 12:6-8 Eph. 4:7, 11-12)
