The Fruit of the Spirit - Peace

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.             Galatians 5:22, 23 (ESV)

…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me–practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.         Philippians 4:6-9 (ESV)

Introduction - The problem of anxiety

Fallen Condition Focus: "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life…" Matthew 6:25 Anxiety, worry, and fear rob us of the peace that is in Christ given to us through the Holy Spirit.

Sermon Proposition: Since Christ has come to give us peace that surpasses understanding, we ought to walk by the Spirit moment by moment.

I. Since Christ has come to give us peace that surpasses understanding, we ought to pray about everything with thanksgiving

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." (Isaiah 26:3)

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body." (Col. 3:15)

II. Since Christ has come to give us peace that surpasses understanding, we ought to think about good things.

"but to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace" (Rom. 8:6)

III. Since Christ has come to give us peace that surpasses understanding, we ought to practice what Christ has taught us.

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Rom. 14:17)

"And this is the way to have the God of peace with us —to keep close to our duty to him. The Lord is with us while we are with him." Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible
