The Comforter Will Teach You
Introduction
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26 (ESV)
Fallen Condition Focus: Pride keeps us from growth in godliness and from receiving help from the Helper, the Holy Spirit
Sermon Proposition: Since the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is sent to teach us, we ought to have an attitude and disposition of constant learning and growth.
The role of a tutor or a coach
I. Since the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is sent to teach us, we ought to have an attitude of constant growth in godliness
The Holy Spirit has been given to us to sanctify us
Sanctification is "the work of God's free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness." Westminster Shorter Catechism (Q. 35)
II. Since the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is sent to teach us, we ought to ask for his help in obeying the commandments of Jesus, primary which is to love one another
The Holy Spirit has been given to us to teach us and enable us to keep the commandments of our Lord Jesus.
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:34-35 (ESV)
The Holy Spirit teaches us how to love with creativity, compassion, and humble service.
Learning to love:
- Husband and wife - the school of character
- Parents and children
- Family
- Brothers and sisters in Christ
- Friends, Neighbors, Co-workers
- Enemies
Conclusion
Prayer:
Breathe into me Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy.
Move in me Holy Spirit that my work, too, may be holy.
Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy.
Strengthen me Holy Spirit that I may defend all that is holy.
Protect me Holy Spirit that I always may be Holy
