The Comforter will be with you
Introduction
Fallen Condition Focus: Separated from the presence of God because of Adam's sin and our own sin, we humans fall into fear and are now ruled by fear.
Sermon Proposition: Since our heavenly Father has given his children the Holy Spirit, we ought to rejoice in God's abiding presence and not fall back into a life of fear
"Before Jesus' passion, he promised that the Father and he would send his disciples 'another Counselor' (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7). The Counselor or Paraclete, from the Greek word parakletos (meaning one who gives support), is a helper, adviser, strengthener, encourager, ally, and advocate. Another points to the fact that Jesus was the first Paraclete and is promising a replacement who, after he is gone, will carry on the teaching and testimony that he started (John 16:6-7)." J. I. Packer, Concise Theology, 143.
I. Since our heavenly Father has given his children the Holy Spirit, we ought to trust in our Father's care for us
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, even the Spirit of truth" John 14:16-17a (ESV)
"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…" Romans 8:14-16 (ESV)
II. Since our heavenly Father has given his children the Holy Spirit, we ought to rejoice in this precious gift that the world cannot receive
"whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him." John 14:17 (ESV)
III. Since our heavenly Father has given his children the Holy Spirit, we ought to acknowledge his presence with us asking for his help to obey Jesus' commandments
"You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." John 14:17 (ESV)
