Greed

Sermon Proposition: Since Jesus has come to us to save our souls and bring us into his kingdom, let us set our hearts on God's eternal kingdom, our true home and security.

Fallen Condition Focus: We too easily see our life bound up in the abundance of our possessions. We believe that our security is based on the laying up of earthly treasures for the future. Because of the inner craving for "more," we covet possessions and things which are not ours and fall into destructive sins.

Purpose: To call us to repent from greed and covetousness and to set our hearts and affections on God and his kingdom

I. Greed and covetousness is based on a false hope in a temporal security and a fading glory (Luke 12:13-32)
A. The Parable of the Rich Fool
Luke 12:15 And he said to them, "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
B. The Anxieties of Life
C. Fear

II. Jesus came to deliver us from this false hope and give us a real eternal security and true riches (Luke 12:22-34)
A. Jesus' teaching about God's provision - a living relationship
B. Jesus' teaching about the Kingdom of God - an eternal home with God
C. Jesus' teaching about eternal treasures - an eternal hope of glory

III. We must actively set our heart upon God's kingdom and lay up for ourselves true security in God (Luke 12:31-34)
A. Seek the Kingdom - readjusting our priorities - God and his kingdom - people - possessions; Romans 13:8-10
B. Sell your possessions - seeking simplicity - internal and external simplicity - 1 Timothy 6:6-10
C. Give to the needy - open hands of generosity - an expression of the joy of the Kingdom of God and freedom from possessions; Matthew 6:2-4
D. Provide for yourselves eternal treasures - set our hearts on eternal securities and an unfading glory; where is our heart? This is the reflection needed at this time - Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will you heart be also
