1. God is light; God is love

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.   1 John 1:5 (ESV)

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 (cf. 4:16)

2. We have sinned and live in darkness

If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

3. God has provided a sacrifice for our sins, Jesus Christ

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2 (ESV)

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.   1 John 4:10 (ESV)

4. If we confess our sins, God will forgive us in Christ

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   1 John 1:9 (ESV)

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.   1 John 1:7 (ESV)
