David, the Father
Introduction
- Fallen Condition Focus: We as fallen human beings do not show mercy to others. We often do not realize how much we need God's mercy for our own sins and therefore, we do not realize the need to show mercy to others. Instead, we allow personal ambition and our narrow judgment of others who have done wrong to dominate our lives and our thinking.
- Sermon Theme Statement: Since God has shown us mercy in Jesus Christ, we ought to show mercy to others
I. Since God has shown us mercy in Jesus Christ, we ought to confess our need for mercy by confessing our sins to God (2 Samuel 11-12; cf. Psalm 32, 51)
II. Since God has shown us mercy in Jesus Christ, we ought to receive the mercy of God (2 Samuel 12; Psalms 32, 103; 1 John 1:5-2:2)
III. Since God has shown us mercy in Jesus Christ, we ought to show mercy to others: our family, friends, and enemies. (2 Samuel 13-18; Matthew 5:43-48)
